About:

My wife Nancy and I have 3 children all of whom graduated from BHS and Concordia College in Moorhead. Karin Olson-Held lives in Moorhead with her husband and son; Jonathan lives and works in Fargo; and Stefan who this past May of 2016 completed his graduate degree receiving a Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) in English Non-Fiction Writing from the University of Montana Missoula. He is locating to St. Paul pursuing a career in teaching at the post secondary level of education.

All of our children excelled in the classroom and participated in extra-curricular activities while attending BHS and Concordia. Music and the arts were, and continue to be important aspects of their lives, as are sports which serve as a Life Balance.

Each of these aspects are important parts of the education process and we must strive to ensure each of our students are afforded the opportunity to accel at learning, experience the arts, and participate in athletics and other extra-curricular activities. Life Balance is a key to future success and growth.

Over the past several years I have had the opportunity to travel abroad to Europe and Asia. Many of these experiences have been with our own students from BHS as staff and chaperones for the Northern Ambassadors of Music, a group comprised of some 300+ upper level student musicians from North Dakota and Montana. We are blessed to have been able to travel abroad eight times (Europe/Asia).

Our local students excel and shine as leaders in their sections, with their talent, and with their exemplary behavior. BHS should be immensely proud as these young men and women represent our city and state with the highest degrees of integrity and ability as they travel throughout Europe.

My personal belief and why I continue to serve our district lies with future of our kids. Each of our board members have a passion for education and engage themselves in ways they feel can make a difference. Our focus is and will continue to be on supporting what I call the “Center of the Universe”- our children and our teachers; all of the rest of us support the learning and educational experience. We must strive to prepare our youth for any and all aspects of life and encourage learning that extends past our walls. In order to do so we must continually invest in professional development of our entire staff- certified and support, technology, learning methods and our facility infrastructure.

Learning is global, it is no longer a local thing.
